12 Benefits of Hiring a Professional Organizer That Go Way Beyond Organizing

Many people hire a professional organizer to declutter, create order, or make their spaces more functional. The good news is that professional organizers can help achieve those goals. However, the benefits of working with a professional organizer can go much deeper than the visible changes in a space.

The right support can help you build confidence, make decisions more easily, develop sustainable habits, and create a home that reflects who you are now. These are just a few of the benefits beyond simply “more organized.”

For over 30 years, I’ve had the joy of helping people navigate organizing challenges. I’ve seen clients transform, becoming more confident, capable, and self-trusting. Beyond becoming more organized, they’ve made profound changes in their mindset, habits, and self-efficacy.

12 Benefits of Hiring a Professional Organizer That Go Way Beyond Organizing

How Can Hiring a Professional Organizer Help?

The reality is that we all need help at times. There is no shame in reaching out for the support you need. I’ve experienced this many times, hiring someone to help with something I was stuck on, to manage a large project, or to fill a skills gap when I couldn’t accomplish what I needed on my own.

Have you worked with a professional organizer? What benefits did you experience? If you are an organizer, what benefits have your clients experienced working with you?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. I invite you to join the conversation.

How to Use a Simple Way to Get Unstuck and Spark Motivation Now

Feeling stuck is something everyone experiences. It can also take a toll on motivation. Have you felt this way lately?

There can be many reasons you might feel at a standstill, such as:

  • Overwhelm from a big or complex project

  • Perfectionism and the belief that you have to do it “the right way”

  • Decision fatigue that leaves you with little capacity to act

  • Unclear about what to do next

  • Lack of accountability or support

  • Unrealistic expectations about what can be accomplished

  • Fear of failure, success, or making the wrong decision

  • Waiting until you feel motivated

Do any of these sound familiar, or is there another reason holding you back?

The “I Can’t” Mindset

When you get stuck, something psychological can happen. Instead of feeling a sense of agency and believing you will figure things out and move forward, you focus on what isn’t possible or what you can’t do.

The “I Can’t” mindset could be what’s keeping you stuck. You might ruminate or focus on messages like:

  • “This project is so big. I’ll never get it done.”

  • “I don’t know where to start.”

  • “I don’t have the time.”

  • “I don’t have the energy.”

  • “It’s impossible for me to get organized.”

  • “I’ll never catch up.”

  • “I’m afraid I’ll make the wrong decision.”

  • “I need to feel motivated first.”

Are any of these phrases ones you ‘hear’ yourself say? Identifying your unique “I Can’t” provides valuable insight into what’s keeping you blocked.

The Shift That Unlocks You, Builds Momentum, and Sparks Motivation

Mindset is everything. It can make all the difference in how you experience life and in what you do or don’t do. One way to take control of the narrative that hasn’t been working for you is to change the dialogue.

Instead of focusing on what’s not possible or your “I Can’t” list, use one of these possibility-infused questions to work its magic. Some options include:

  • What’s one small step I can take right now?

  • What’s possible today?

  • What’s one thing I can do in the next five minutes?

  • What’s good enough for today?

  • What would make this a little easier?

And if you want an elegantly simple question, here’s one from James Clear that I love:

“What can I do?”

Ask a possibility-focused question to immediately shift your mindset toward a more positive, proactive one.

What can I do?
— James Clear

The Choice Is Yours

It doesn’t feel good to be stuck. Your internal dialogue strongly shapes whether you stay stuck or move forward. Pay attention to the messages you tell yourself. You have the power to shift the dialogue from “I can’t” to “I can.”

Which phrases help or hurt you? How could a shift in mindset benefit you? How would that shift help you get unstuck? In what ways would it help build your motivation? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I invite you to join the conversation.

2. Interesting Resource – Human Helping

Last month, I went on a field trip with some of my Westchester NAPO Neighborhood group organizing colleagues to The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester, NY.

This remarkable nonprofit provides clothing, school supplies, and other essential necessities, including new socks, shoes, underwear, and hygiene products, to children and teens in Westchester County.

They offer a Wardrobe Pack, which includes a week’s worth of seasonally appropriate clothing tailored to a child’s needs. They also have a Teen Boutique, a free store where teens can “shop and select their own clothing with privacy and respect.”

The Sharing Shelf reports that children facing clothing insecurity “often miss school.” The research shows that “Nearly 14% of Westchester children are chronically absent from school, and clothing is one critical cause.”

Donations of new or gently used clothing in all sizes, from newborn to adult XXL, are accepted. Items should be clean and in good condition. Pieces that are stained or damaged will be sent to textile recycling. The Sharing Shelf has a Target registry and an Amazon wishlist, so you can order items they need.

When you bring more mindfulness and purpose to organizing, you can create calm, clarity, and breathing room.

3. Interesting Read – Human Doing

You’ve probably heard of FOMO, the fear of missing out. Have you heard of the opposite, JOMO, which is the joy of missing out?

In The Joy of Missing Out – Living More by Doing Less, Tanya Dalton, a productivity expert, author, and speaker, discusses the overwhelm many women experience due to:

  • Striving to do too much

  • Inability to say no

  • Being unclear about priorities

  • Not knowing where to start

Tanya encourages a mindset shift, saying, “We have to begin finding the joy of missing out on that extra noise in our lives and instead find happiness in a life centered around what’s truly important to us.” She encourages us to “stop the glorification of busy” and to stop worrying that we’re not enough or are not doing enough.

In this four-step liveWELL Method, which Tanya developed for herself, she now uses it to help others create a blueprint for reclaiming their time and living the life they desire. The steps are:

  • Discovery – Identify your unique purpose, life priorities, and North Star.

  • Clarity – Align your projects and tasks with your goals and priorities.

  • Simplicity – Design systems that make your life easier, enabling you to manage it with less effort.

  • Harmony – Build upon the first three steps to create harmony and the life you love.

Tanya says, “We need to discover the priorities that are unique to us, but first we have to take hold of the truth: we must be willing to not have it all.”

We have to begin finding the joy of missing out on that extra noise in our lives and instead find happiness in a life centered around what’s truly important to us.

4. Interesting Product – Human Curating

One of my favorite things to organize is cabinet drawers. The more chaotic, the better. A disorganized drawer presents an opportunity to edit, organize, and create order. Why does it matter?

Imagine the feeling of opening a drawer and finding exactly what you need right when you need it. No more searching or stress. It’s a good feeling, and a time-saver, too.

Recently, my husband asked me for drawer organizers and a design for his desk drawer. I recommended these lovely gray open bins, Terra Recycled Drawer Organizers from The Container Store. They also come in white and a variety of sizes. I liked them so much that I purchased more to organize a drawer in our shoe cabinet.

5. Interesting Thought – Human Experiencing

Let’s face it. Life can be stressful and chaotic. You make plans, and things change. You start a project, and something goes wrong. Your schedule is packed with little or no downtime.

However, even knowing this, you can experience joy in everyday moments. Let yourself be open to those tiny, ordinary moments. They can replenish your reserves, reinforce your gratitude wells, and help you feel more alive in a uniquely human way.

What can these joy-infused moments feel or look like? There are a few I recently experienced:

  • Hearing a client acknowledge and feel positive about their progress.

  • Seeing the afternoon sun backlight the red and orange leaves as the gentle breeze moves them softly against the blue sky.

  • Holding hands with my husband.

  • Experiencing progress, completing projects, or making purposeful choices in the service of growth and change.

  • Taking the first flavorful bite of a new vegetarian chili recipe I just made, and it was delicious.

  • Feeling warm water pouring over me as I shower.

  • Seeing the autumn light fill the sky with a soft pink and orange glow.

  • Hearing the voices of my loved ones, seeing their faces, or hugging them.

  • Getting into bed at the end of a long day and feeling the comforting weight and softness of the bedding.

Human Organizing Experience

In a world flooded with AI, it’s important to keep the human connection strong and vibrant. I highlighted several ways to tap into your uniquely human qualities to improve organization, balance, gratitude, and generosity.

Which of these discoveries resonates most with you? Do you have any you’d like to add? I’d love to hear your thoughts and invite you to join the conversation.

How Celebrating Clutter Can Make Surprising and Heart-Warming Outcomes

Have you ever considered celebrating clutter? Most people don’t think about it that way. We often view clutter as an overabundance of things, thoughts, or time that prevents us from living in the ways we value most.

The idea of celebrating clutter might almost seem like an oxymoron. More often, clutter feels like a burden, which can be overwhelming or paralyzing. It gets in the way and blocks forward movement.

Perhaps a better word choice is honoring instead of celebrating. What becomes possible when you approach clutter in this way? I will share a story with you to illustrate how this idea originated.

The Origin Story for Celebrating Clutter

Recently, I reread a post I wrote fifteen years ago, “As Sure as a Crocus.” Surprisingly, I found a comment (also from then) that I had never seen or responded to. I’m unsure how I missed it because I usually respond to all comments.

This message was especially poignant and heart-warming because it came from my mom, who has passed away. Seeing her signature made me smile, as she signed it with a secret name I knew was hers.

The timing of reading her words was significant for me. It was in March, the anniversary month of her birth and death. She’s been gone for four years, and I miss her terribly. As I read Mom’s sweet note of support, encouragement, and gratitude, I deeply and immediately felt her love and our connection, transcending the constructs of time and space.

How does this connect to celebrating clutter?

Why Celebrate Clutter?

Addressing the clutter in your life can be approached in many ways. One strategy is to identify and release those things that no longer belong, serve a purpose, or align with who you are now. From there, you can focus on organizing the “keepers.”

Another approach is to find the treasures and keepers first. After that step, edit those things you want to let go of.

With both strategies, you will undoubtedly make discoveries. You’ll find letters from loved ones now gone, notes with great ideas to pursue one day, children’s art, old photos, vacation memorabilia, or materials from previous careers.

These findings can evoke a range of emotions as they highlight and represent different stages and aspects of your life.

Celebrating clutter can enhance the decluttering process in several ways by gifting yourself time to:

  • Revisit and appreciate the items you’re releasing.

  • Enjoy and review some of the “treasures.”

  • Celebrate with a dance, high-fives, or cheers after a decluttering session.

How Does Clutter Affect You?

Decluttering can be energizing or exhausting, depending on your mindset and situation. Approaching it with a celebratory perspective can transform your experience and make it more positive and affirming.

What is your relationship to clutter? What could celebrating clutter look like for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I invite you to join the conversation.
