3 Powerful Questions to Cut Through the Noise and See What's Possible

Figuring out what’s possible can feel elusive for many reasons. Your mind can be busy, distracted, clouded, or overloaded. This “noise” can make it hard to see your options. Other factors can make possibility thinking harder, including:

  • Unsupportive physical environment

  • Overwhelming schedule

  • Difficulty making decisions

What if you had a toolbox of questions that could reduce the chatter, bring clarity, and spark action?

Powerful questions can help you get unstuck while also offering benefits such as:

  • Lowering stress

  • Ruminating less

  • Taking more action

  • Boosting energy

  • Improving well-being

James Clear writes a weekly 3-2-1 newsletter that I love receiving. The format is simple: he shares three ideas, two quotes, and one question. This post draws inspiration from his newsletter.

3 Powerful Questions to Cut Through the Noise and See What’s Possible

1. Remove Your Distraction

Oh, those distractions! They can be everywhere. There can be so many that trying to eliminate them all feels overwhelming. If physical interruptions or annoyances in your environment are getting in the way, removing one distraction is an excellent place to start.

To do this, Clear suggests that you “Pick one room where you spend a lot of time…Keep what serves you or inspires you. Remove what distracts you.”

Powerful Question 1:

“What is one item in this room that you no longer use or do not benefit from?”
— James Clear

2. Narrow Your Objective

There’s nothing wrong with thinking big or having a lot you want to accomplish. However, if too many goals or ideas make it hard to know what to focus on, consider narrowing the scope. This can help you get unstuck and make progress.

Clear says, “Clarity isn’t about knowing what you want to do with your life, it’s about knowing what you want to do this week. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to know your next step.”

Powerful Question 2:

“What is the next step you can take right now to support what you want to do this week?”
— Linda Samuels, CPO-CD®, CVOP™

3. Reframe Your Focus

Each day, do you tend to focus more on fixing problems or on enhancing what’s working? Neuroscience research suggests that our brains are wired for a negativity bias. In our evolutionary past, paying attention to potential threats helped keep us safe by detecting danger and responding quickly through fight, flight, or freeze. However, this bias can create obstacles today.

By recognizing this bias, you can ask different questions that shift your focus from fixing what’s wrong to building on what’s right. Clear shared an idea from executive coach Joe Hudson. Instead of asking a question that reinforces the negativity bias, “What’s wrong and how do I fix it?” try experimenting with this reframe instead:

Powerful Question 3:

“What’s right and how do I grow it?”
— Joe Hudson

What’s Possible for You?

When you clear the noise, clarify where to focus, and change how you approach what’s in front of you, meaningful progress follows. With three simple questions, you can not only imagine what’s possible but also take the action needed to make it happen.

Which questions resonate with you? How have you used these or similar questions? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and I invite you to join the conversation.

2. Interesting Product – Card Clutter

One of the questions clients frequently ask me is,

“What should I do with all the cards I have received?”

Card recipients often feel guilty for letting them go, so they hold onto them for years or decades. However, they feel distressed by card clutter and the space they take.

Some cards aren’t as treasured. However, many are sentimental and meaningful, received by loved ones here and gone. So, how do you decide what to do?

Card Decluttering Process:

  • Gather your cards

  • Keep your favorites, which include cherished hand-written messages or ones you especially enjoy

  • Recycle the rest

What can you do with the keepers? You can contain them in a box. Or, there’s another fun way to make them a usable keepsake. Transform them into an 8” x 8” custom hardcover book with Cards by Artkive.

Check out the video describing their process.

3. Interesting Read – Communication Clutter

Are you overwhelmed by email, text, and other communication clutter? This deluge creates mind clutter, too. There have never been this many ways to communicate, and it’s a lot to sift through.

Smart Brevity–The Power of Saying More with Less by the co-creators of Axios and Politico said, “Never in the history of humanity have we vomited more words in more places with more velocity.”

As a verbal processor, I am guilty of using lots of words. However, this book inspires me to think about the impact and stress this has on others. It includes specific techniques for creating shorter, more robust communication for email, meetings, speeches, presentations, social media, and more. “Smart Brevity is a new way to think about creating, sharing, and consuming information in our cluttered, clanging digital world.”

Authors Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen, and Roy Schwartz created a nifty AI-powered Smart Brevity® test. Enter your text, and the tool scores how “smart, clear, and effective it is.”

Declutter your communication. Stop overexplaining. “We make people deduce what we’re trying to say instead of just blurting it out. Don’t be fancy-be effective.”

“Remove clutter that’s distracting you.”
— Linda Samuels, CPO-CD®, CVOP@

5. Interesting Thought – ‘Noise’ Clutter

When your spaces, calendars, and thoughts are filled with too much noise, it’s impossible to focus on what matters most. This is an excellent time of year to quiet things down. Remove clutter that’s distracting you. Let go of the unnecessary, and create space to invite in what you truly value.

2. Interesting Trend – Immersive Fresh Start

Color drenching is a design trend that has emerged in recent years. Amy Wax, an internationally recognized color expert, describes a color-drenched interior as “designed with one color in mind, and that color doesn’t just coat the walls…it’s everywhere…a real color-drenched interior means that the ceiling, trim, railings, doors, and sometimes even the floor all have the same color.”

Are you wondering about the connection between the color-drenching trend and a fresh start? I thought you might. Words describing this trend include daring, saturated, adventurous, all-consuming, harmonizing, sensual, and calming. As you begin this New Year and embrace your fresh start, which words speak to you? Do you want more adventures and boldness, or would you like more calm and harmony? Select a theme to ‘drench’ your year that can be a guiding force for your choices and goals. What color or word speaks to you?

3. Interesting Read – Peaceful Fresh Start

Do you desire a more peaceful, calmer life? We now have 24-7 access to people, places, and things. Life has become complicated, noisy, and distracting.

A Simpler Life – A Guide to Greater Serenity, Ease and Clarity by The School of Life provides a path to “the simpler lives we crave and deserve.” We’re at an unusual juncture where the yearning for simplicity is historically reasonably new. “We long to unburden ourselves of excess, to have more straightforward relationships, to declutter our homes, and to avoid noise, complexity, and fuss. Simplicity has grown central to our vision of happiness.”

The book focuses on five areas to simplify- relationships, social life, lifestyle, work, and culture. If your fresh start includes the desire to release the excess, you’ll appreciate the suggestions explored. “Simplicity isn’t so much a life with a few things and commitments in it, as a life with the right, necessary things, attuned to our flourishing. Our lives will feel – and be – simpler when we’ve probed our minds to yield…the knowledge of what we truly want.”

“Your fresh start is ready for you to lean in, activate, and thrive.”
— Linda Samuels, CPO-CD®, CVOP™

4. Interesting Product – Focused Fresh Start

During a session with one of my virtual organizing clients, she showed me an adorable gift she purchased for the holidays. Toast is marketed as a night light. However, she and a few of her friends use it differently. They turn it on to help them focus when working. It has a warm, dimmable glow, an adjustable timer, and a ‘friendly’ face.

I couldn’t resist, so I purchased a mint green one to see if it would help me. To my delight, it does. As a matter of fact, while writing this post, I brought my Toast nearby to keep me company and hold my attention. I didn’t use the timer feature, but I found the gentle light worked for me.

Check out this little fellow if you want your fresh start to include more focused work and improved concentration.

5. Interesting Thought – Promising Fresh Start

What is the best thing about the New Year? It allows you to reset, rethink, and reimagine how you want the next twelve months to be. If you want to make tiny tweaks or strive for those big, audacious goals, you have the spaciousness to make things happen. Let go of what doesn’t work, learn from your mishaps, and activate the hope-filled ‘blank canvas’ the New Year brings. Your fresh start is ready for you to lean in, activate, and thrive.

Do you have an interesting, fresh start-related discovery? Which of these resonates with you? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I invite you to join the conversation.

Here’s to you and a happy, healthy, joy-filled, and organized New Year!

What Kind of Overwhelming 'Noise' Does Your Clutter Actually Make?

One of my favorite authors and creative thinkers, Todd Henry, regularly introduces me to new concepts. I admire how he connects ideas from different places to offer fresh perspectives and understanding. Recently, he wrote about the “noise floor,” an audio production term. I equated it to the ‘noise’ clutter makes in our lives.

Todd defined the noise floor as “…the amount of unwanted signal coming from any source other than the one you’re actually trying to record. Listening to someone speak in an environment with a high noise floor is like trying to have a conversation at the beach with a crashing ocean ten feet away. You can make out what they’re saying, but it’s not easy to do.”

He explained how we often “not only allow but invite a high noise floor into our lives.” These “signals” are inputs, requests, demands, and stimuli. If the noise floor in your life is too high, Todd says you might experience things like:

  • Having difficulty with short-term memory and confusing simple concepts

  • Experiencing ongoing distractions and struggling to focus on one project

While you might be functioning with clutter in your life, it could be creating more stress, overwhelm, and challenges than you realize. Are you collecting clutter instead of editing, eliminating, and creating boundaries to keep it under control?

6 Types of Clutter

Think about the noise your clutter makes and how it affects your daily experience. There are different types of clutter, including:

  • Mind clutter – Negative thoughts, thought loops, and disorganized thoughts make activating difficult.

  • Physical clutter – Paper, clothing, toys, and items filling up your environment make it challenging to know what you have.

  • Space clutter – Overfilled rooms, closets, and drawers, make it challenging to move about and locate things.

  • Calendar clutter – Lack of time awareness, chronic lateness, overscheduling, inability to say “no,” and unnecessary meetings affect your stress levels and overall functioning.

  • Digital clutter – Tech devices, email, social media, Internet surfing, dings, and pop-ups create continual distractions, decreasing focus and productivity.

  • Someday clutter – Postponed decisions about things you “might need someday” prevent you from being fully present and available to enjoy now.

“Clutter can create more stress and overwhelm than you realize.”
— Linda Samuels, CPO-CD®, CVOP™

What becomes possible when you lower your clutter noise floor? What will a less cluttered mind, home, or calendar look and feel like for you? Which area needs your time and attention?
